Forex Trading Hours: When Does the Market Open and What's the Best Time to Trade?

The Forex market is open 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, allowing traders to enter and exit positions at any time. But did you know that market volatility varies significantly throughout the day? Understanding when the market opens in each time zone and which periods are best for trading can help you plan your trades more effectively.

When Does the Forex Market Open in Each Time Zone?

The Forex market operates across four main sessions based on time zones: Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York. Opening and closing times vary by season.

Sydney Session opens from 00:00 to 09:00 (Thai time). This is the first session of the day, typically with relatively low volatility. It's suitable for traders who prefer to start the day at a slower pace.

Tokyo Session opens from 08:00 to 17:00 (Thai time). This is the Asian market session, usually with moderate volatility. It's often when Asian currency pairs like JPY, AUD, and NZD see the most movement.

London Session opens from 14:00 to 23:00 (Thai time). This is considered the most important session of the day because it's the world's largest market. It typically sees high volatility and is often when clear trends develop.

New York Session opens from 19:00 to 04:00 (Thai time). This is the final session of the day, also with high volatility, especially during US economic news releases.

What Is the Overlap Period and Why Is It Important?

The overlap period, or when different sessions are open simultaneously, is when the market experiences its highest volatility and greatest trading volume throughout the day.

London-New York Overlap is from 19:00 to 23:00 (Thai time). This is the most volatile period of the day because both the London and New York markets are open at the same time. It's often when professional traders are most active.

Tokyo-London Overlap is from 14:00 to 17:00 (Thai time). This period sees moderate to high volatility, especially for currency pairs involving JPY.

What's the Best Time to Trade?

For beginner traders, we recommend starting with the London-New York Overlap (19:00 to 23:00 Thai time) because it has high liquidity, tight spreads, and often provides clearer trading signals.

However, if you trade Asian currency pairs like USD/JPY or AUD/USD, the Tokyo-London Overlap (14:00 to 17:00 Thai time) is also a good time to consider.

Why You Should Avoid Major News Releases

During major economic news releases such as interest rate announcements, GDP data, or employment figures, the market can become extremely volatile and unpredictable. While these periods may offer significant profit opportunities, they also carry higher risk, especially for beginner traders.

We recommend checking the economic calendar before entering trades and avoiding holding positions through major news releases if you don't yet have experience trading during news events.
